Question:
With some of the names they’re giving to cars these days: the Pontiac Solstice, the Chevy Equinox…
Perhaps trying to appeal to us Wiccans and other Earth-spiritual pagans?
Just a silly thought I had last night. (I had such a bad week last week that this week I just want to laugh and have fun!)
Plus I just started car shopping, as my poor ol’ 12 year old Chevy Lumina is starting to get tired and fall apart – almost time to put it to rest.
Happy Friday all!
LMAO Ptah! How true, for this pagan and a few of my friends anyway.
Sure, they’re astronomy terms – but Wiccans and some other pagans celebrate these times of year – they are 4 of our holy days. Are there more astronomers out there than Wiccans and pagans?
The 2 solstices and 2 equinoxes being 4 of our 8 holy days during the year, that is, not Pontiac & Chevy
Tahuti – I was sort of eyeballing an Equinox too, which is what made me chuckle and think of this question. But I haven’t decided for sure yet – still looking around.

There was an announcement going around last year that Toyota was going to release the Priapus.

That would’ve been something!
Me, I’m buying a Vibe next year. The Oldsmobile may not make it through another winter and the Vibe will fit all my husband’s gear alot better. And I didn’t realize until just now that Vibe is a term we use alot too….

I don’t think car manufacturers really pay much attention to the meaning of the words they use for names. I think they sit in a dusty basement office flipping through a dictionary or two (especially the ones of languages OTHER than english) unilthey come across a word that strikes them as “cool”. They make sure that the word isn’t obsene and throw it in a hat (a very large lat). Then they walk around the city asking people to pull words fromt he hat and askthose people if it would make a good car name. If they say it would, they make a note of it. Then that reduced list goes through 17 more phases of manuplation, conjugation, respelling and many cycles through the art department. And what comes out is nothing- so they start over. In the end someone just says “use that one” and voila! Car has a name.
In all seriousness though, do manufacturers of, well, anything, target the Pagan community? I’m excluding manufacturers of common or exclusively pagan items, of course….
Well, they could have just named it the Pontiac Goddess, right?

I hadn’t thought of that.
I would have to say that they could have picked some special cars for those names. I don’t think those are too special. Then again, I’m annoyed with all car manufacturers.

I hope that you get a snazzy good car. Sorry to hear about your car. honestly I never heard of that solstice and that equinox. I guess that they are other names for the ones in the 8 sabbats. And automobile companies should only sell you the car. Not be appealing to you, they are not your account manager. As that would be not good business from them. Blessed Be

Who knows….
I’ve often wondered what the heck car companies are thinking with the weird names they give cars. The one that does appeal to me (and only slightly because of the name) is the Nissan Titan – I hate trucks, but when I first saw that I truck I thought to myself “that is a sexy truck”.
But most of their names backfire because I have a Nissan Maxima and back a few years ago I was having a lot of trouble with it and my dad dubbed it a “Minima”.

No. Solstice and Equinox are astronomical terms. The car companies are trying to appeal to astronomers.
Isn’t a pontiac a potato?
Mmm? Vegan- astronomers.

Please don’t put a spell on me!!!
wicca? is that like a wooden box or something?
Earth-Spiritual? Oh, I get it, Mother Earth and Father Sky, Sister Bush, and Brother Lake. Cool.
Yeah, I think the huge car companies are worried about appealing to witches and warlocks. Definately.

I think they are trying to appeal just as much to the astronomy crowd as they are the pagan crowd, as those are astronomy terms that certain sects of paganism give meaning to the event’s occurance.

Maybe they haven’t figured out yet that Pagans are broke.

No offensee, but when the idea guys at major car companies sit around, I assume their first question isn’t “how can we attract the wiccan demogaphic?”

Maybe they’re running out of cool sounding names to call their cars. If they were trying to, they couldn’t admit it – can you imagine the field day the fundies would have with that? Whew…
An amusing thought though.
