Question:
I don’t have a hearth or anything to sacrifice to the gods with. I don’t have any alters. I can’t use online shopping, and they don’t see stuff for alters at our local stores. If I can find them, I probably can’t afford them because I am very poor. Do you have to be rich to worship the gods. or is there another Solution? answer only if you know, No saying stupid stuff like they don’t care because the are fake. or anything like that. just answer my question. Hellenist pagans would get the best answer because they don’t say that they are fake. They would actually answer the question. but it is possible if you actually answer it and know about hellenist paganism. and how do people know if they are priest or priestess (just wondering.)
pretent alter says altar
The problem is that I live in a place were you can’t have fire in or out of the house. pluss, I am not really supose to believe this, my family is Atheist. they would get mad at me if I say this to them. I can bring food up to my room to sacrifise, but the problem is no hearth aloud.

Merry Meet,
I am an Eclectic Pagan. When I was younger, I couldn’t let anyone know, it was not accepted as it is today, so I was taught to do everything “mentally”, cast the circle, call the corners, setting up my Altar, lighting the candles, the only phycial items I ever had were beautiful shells, rocks and flowers I collected, these were also the items I offered as gifts to my Goddess’ and God’s. I was taught to know my Goddess’ and God’s are more interested in my Spriituality, love and devotion than anything else. Doing it mentally also develops your powers in a way you would never imagine =) it may take time to picture everything, but trust me, it will happen, and it will be strong!
Bright Blessings

Dear Amy:
I am a feminist Pagan of Eclectic Origins of 18+ years. Goddess does not care what you chose to use for sacred items on your Altar. You can take items from around your home or items you have hand made, say a sincere prayer over them, and they will be just as good & sacred to the Goddess as anything you bought in a Pagan store for 10X the price. It is with how much heart & spirit that you put into your ritual that She will gage your faith on.
As far as being a Priest/ess, often, Solitary practitioners will initiate themselves after several years of practice, based on their particular pantheons structure & rules. Otherwise, it is dependent on your Coven and the rules they have decided upon, including education, skill level & specific qualities of said person. For right now, you need not worry on being a priest/ess. Continue your studies & look to Her for Guidance. I’m curious, though. Not many Pantheons require food sacrifice…on High Sabbat, it is sometimes customary to leave out fresh fruits for Goddess or other Spirits, but other than that, sacrifice is generally frowned upon. But then again, this is just based on the instruction & studies I have followed. May your path be Green & Golden my dear!

You do not need some fancy store bought altar. My altar is currently on an end table no longer in use. I’ve set up altars on my nightstand and part of my dresser before. You can use an old tree stump outside if you want. As far as things to offer the gods it doesn’t have to be fancy or eleborate. For example Hecate is fond of raisin and currant cakes. So if I bake some or even some oatmeal raisin cookies I will leave some on the altar as an offering to her. I might burn myrrh as incense since it is sacred to her. Just find out what things are sacred to the deity you are working w/ and go from there. Hope this helps.

I’ve known several people who used hibachis or a small low sitting barbecue. Depending on you living arrangements there are a number of options. Something could be built in your yard if you have one quite inexpensively, I knew one family that used to simply collect large stones and built a small fire pit next to their porch. The thing to bear in mind that in an offering it’s as much a matter of the thought and effort as of expense, it shows more devotion to go out into the fields and collect a bouquet of flowers than to buy one on the way home from work, and the Gods care more about effort than price tags.

Pagans in general generally hold that religion is not economic-specific. if you’re a hellenist pagan, you’re seeking a relationship with hellenic gods. There’s a variety of ways of doing that, and it certainly doesn’t require large expenditures of money.
Priest or priestess is generally a position within a community. It’s not like you just magically become one. It’s a role held by certain people, generally those well experienced and educated in the appropriate path.

Perhaps if you spelled it “altar”, you’d have more luck.

Everything you need can be made or collected for free. I built an alter from large field-stones. There are no specifics to contend with. Just do what feels right.
