Please explain the concept of a Christian Wicca?

The following is a question asked on Yahoo Answers. The comments reflect the views of the individual and not the website as a whole.

Question:
I have seen people say that they are Christian Wicca, it is a contradiction of terms. I don’t understand. Wicca is a pagan religion and aren’t Christians specifically taught that Witches are evil and that they should not live? How can you have it both ways?

Definitely a difference between the structured belief system of Wicca and the practice of witchcraft, magick, alchemy, etc. However, I often find that when doing research on the different pantheons, some books will state that these are all aspects of just one God. Now back to the Goddess. Is Mary also an aspect of a duality, or is in Christianity, does duality exist? my gut feeling says that the feminine aspect was somehow suppressed throughout history. I think that is why people struggle with Christianity when looking at one single non dual God. Once again, where does the split occur? I think we seek to personify spirit in ways that we can relate. Now back to heaven and hell…is it eternal or is it fluctuating, Christian beliefs say it is a real experience and that only Jesus can save us. Wiccan says we save ourselves. Or did jesus just teach us as an example of how to live so we could save ourselves? Welp, I am certainly gonna shelf this discussion for now, makes my head spin. Thanks for making my brain workout today.

First of all, the killing witches is based off a deliberate mistranslation of Exodus 11:18, which originally said, “Don’t let a murderer/poisoner live.” The Greek word venefica, which originally meant murderer/poisoner, gained the additional meaning “witch” in the 5th century AD or so. When the KJV of the Bible was translated, the translators chose to use the word “witch” to translate venefica, thus changing the meaning of the original passage.

As to your question about Christian Wicca, remember that Wicca consists of both a religion, and the Craft. These are people who practice the Craft in a Christian context, instead of worshiping the God and Goddess of Wicca. These people refer to themselves as Christian Wicca. It is possible that they want to practice the Craft, but decide to remain Christian “just in case” out of fear of Hell.

I have done some research on this path seeing as my sister’s boyfriend is Christian Wiccan.

From what I understand they belive in the Christian God and Jesus some believe that the Holy Spirit is female some believe that the Vergin Mary and Mary Megdalin were human forms of Goddess. They also adhere to some of our other beliefs, like the boyfriend believes in reincarnation and the “supernatural”. Christian Wiccan’s also hold the normal Esbats and Sabbats that Wiccans do.

You are correct. The religions contradict each other.

    Read this essay: http://wicca.timerift.net/christianwicca.shtml

Also, you are mistaken in thinking that Wicca and witchcraft are synonymous. Witchcraft is a practice of magic. with no concrete religious associations. Wicca is a religion, with the main goal of spiritualism. I am a Wiccan who is not a witch.

In some ways the answer to this question is complex, which is why the following is long. I’ll get thumbsdowned for length, but I don’t care.

Christianity and Wicca as a syncretic, hyphenate religion cannot exist. While there those who very sincerely believe that they are following both, they are not…
The fault rests on how one defines Christian.

If you define Christian as one who believes Christ existed, regardless of whether or not one believes in his teaching, it is possible that one could define oneself as a Wiccan Christian, but most Christians would say, quite rightly, that merely believing Christ EXISTED is NOT what makes a Christian.

Merriam Webster (m-w.com) defines a Christian as ” one who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ*”

It is possible to PROFESS belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ and be a Wiccan.

    ..You’d also be a liar.

Because it is impossible to BELIEVE IN or AGREE WITH those teachings as a Wiccan.

One common teaching in Christianity that is used to define Christianity is the Nicene Creed. If we examine it, we can see it is ABSOLUTELY NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WICCA. Observe.

    (My comments follow in brackets:)

    The Nicene Creed:**
We believe in one God, [Wiccans are polytheists]
the Father, the Almighty,[Wicca does not teach omnipotence]
    maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
[Wicca does not support Creationism but instead teaches "as above, so below, which includes the idea that the Universe may be interpreted by observation of its parts]

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
    the only Son of God,
    eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
    true God from true God,
    begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
[Wicca teaches that there are multiple gods, and that all people are children of gods. Wicca does not mention Jesus at all.]

Through him all things were made.
[Wicca teaches that humankind makes many things.]
For us and for our salvation
[Wicca has no concept of salvation]
    he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
[Wicca has no heaven, nor a Holy Spirit]
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
    and was made man.
[Wicca teaches that humans are born human and gods are born gods. Transformation in one life from one species to another is not a part of Wicca.]
    For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
[HUGE POINT! Wicca teaches that RESPONSIBILITY for all of a Wiccan's actions are upon that Wiccan, and must be taken care of by that Wiccan. Thus, in Wicca, it is impossible to die or suffer for someone ELSE except in very specific, personal situations (like taking a bullet for someone.) Wicca teaches there are no SINS, so there was literally no reason for Christ to die!]

On the third day he rose again
    in accordance with the Scriptures;
[This is in no WICCAN Scripture]
    he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
[Wicca has no concept of who sits to what side of any father deity.]
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end. [Wicca has no teaching about a half-god judging living or dead, and, in fact, has teachings about who judges the dead...There is also no teaching of a Kingdom to Come in Wicca.]

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
    [And Wiccans don't]
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
    [Which Wiccans don't do.]
He has spoken through the Prophets.
    [Who are not Wiccan.]
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
    [Which Wiccans do not.]
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
    [Wiccans neither baptize nor sin.]
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
    [Wiccans do not.]
and the life of the world to come.
[Wicca does not teach of a coming future world, but of NOW worlds.]

I am sure there are some who think they are Wiccan and Christian, but they aren’t. Either you think Jesus died for your sins (Christianity) or you acknowledge the doctrine of Self-responsibility as a proper person or adult human (Wicca). They are mutually self-exclusive.

I actually feel sorry for those that do think they are one and the same because every one of them I have met confuses Wicca (Worship of the gods and living by their standards) with magic, and Christianity has a long and perfectly valid tradition of magic that existed BEFORE WICCA ever existed. 7. Phoenix - pagan 1/2 of JPA says:

As a Wiccan, I must state that I think they are terribly misinformed about BOTH religions.

If one is to call themselves a Christian, one must accept that Jesus died as a savior for your sins.

If one is to call themselves a Wiccan, one must accept that there is no such thing as a “sin” and that the consequences of one’s actions come back to them and that no one else can pay those consequences for you.

Wicca is inherently polytheistic. Christianity is inherently monotheistic.

One cannot be a polytheistic monotheist any more than one can be a meat-eating vegetarian.

I could go on for quite some time about the inherent contradictions of the core beliefs of both religions.

To claim both is to disrespect both and to change the beliefs to such an extent that one cannot realistically be said to be following either one.

    EDIT:
And just on a side note, witchcraft and Wicca are not synonymous. There are plenty of Christian Witches because witchcraft is a practice that does not require any specific religious beliefs whatsoever. Christian magic has traditions that go back for centuries.

Most educated Christians now are aware that “witch” is a mistranslation for “poisoner” in that infamous verse.

Christian Wiccans are wiccans who are not yet ready to let go of past beliefs. They are still stuck to old beliefs. They want to go to “Heaven” yet still be able to practice Witchcraft with the safety net of Christianity behind them.

To do that is to break it down.We all are familiar with both Christianity and wicca but…Do we know their translations and their history.First Wicca or witchcraft is above all else the craft of the wise.It is the oldest belief predating Christianity. And of course Christianity is following in the belief in Christ. If both are fused together. It would be following the path of Christ wisely. In the early beginnings of Christianity what you are saying is quite true. The crusades were all about that.If you ever read the book”The Mists of Avalon you would better understand how Christianity tried to completely wipe out the old religion as it was called then. And all who did not convert over to Christianity were put to death. At that point anyone who believed in the craft of the wise had to practice secretly. That is why we still to this day continue to practiced in secrecy. We meet in secret places and perform our rituals where no one but believers can see.And didn’t Jesus and his apostles do the same when the church was against them?Religious persecution is nothing new.

I’m afraid that those who call themselves Christian Wicca, or Christian Witches, are terribly, profoundly confused about who Christ is and why He was born into this world.

There is no such thing as a Christian Wicca. There are only Wicca who think that are Christian.

EDIT: Anyone who practices magic is not a Christian. Christians rely on God, not on demons.

I have explored Christo-Wicca but was unable to reconcile it’s polytheistic views with my own. I refer to myself as a Pagan-Influenced Christian (a Christian Witch, if you will) I believe that there is one God, who is the Author of the Universe and all magick therein.

I was not brought up on either path. I was always taught to love God but my parents never told me how to become a Christian. In my teens, I found Christ and He changed my life. I began teaching Sunday School and acting as Youth Group Director in my early twenties, which required much Bible study in preparation for lessons. I found that the more I studied and learned, the more I was unable to validate the rejection of certain aspects of Paganism and Witchcraft in the Bible. I have since incorporated them into my worship and left the church I was a member of out of respect for them (they were a Southern Baptist denomination) I would love to find a more welcoming and understanding body of believers with whom to worship, but for now I practice in solitude.

I have learned so much by stepping outside of the Southern Baptist “box”. I understand the spiritual world in ways I could have never dreamed. In short, I could not be happier.

I would assume that they use the worship activities of Wicca/paganism (spells, divination, meditation) and instead of working with the generic God and Goddess of Wicca, they work with the Christian god.

Most Christians today are not taught specifically to kill witches. The King James bible says this, but this is poorly translated, and the verse in Hebrew said to not suffer a poisoner to live.
